Avian Flu

ChickenAvian Flu (Avian influenza H5N1) is commonly known as bird flu as it is a contagious disease which normally affects birds.

All bird species are susceptible to infection, however domestic poultry are especially vulnerable to the infection. This can lead to rapid epidemics in poultry species.

Transmission of the infection to humans is rare and would normally be encountered by people with close contact to poultry or other bird species and only with some strains of avian influenza.

The potential for transformation of avian influenza into a form that both causes severe disease in humans and spreads easily from person to person is a great concern for world health.

You should call the DEFRA helpline on 08459 335577 if you find:

  • One or more dead swans, or
  • More than three dead birds of the same species, or
  • More than five dead birds of different species

For more information and guidance on Avian Flu visit the DEFRA| website.
