Preparing for an Emergency
It is unlikely that any of us will ever be caught in an emergency or disaster
but they can happen anywhere at any time and when you are least expecting it.
Industrial accidents, severe weather, fires, transport accidents and many other emergencies can strike without warning and have the possibility of disrupting and threatening lives and the community.
This section explains basic steps that should be taken by individuals so that if an emergency does occur you can be prepared to deal with it.

The UK government sent out a leaflet in 2004 to all households called preparing for Emergencies - What you need to Know'
The booklet contains useful information and steps that you can take to help yourself and your family in the event of an emergency.
The Preparing for Emergencies| website contains all the information in the booklet plus any additional information that has been made available by the government.
Evacuation
If you are asked to evacuate your home by the emergency services, follow their advice and leave as soon as possible. You would normally be taken to a reception centre where you can be looked after until its safe for you to return to your home.
If you have any elderly or disabled neighbours check that they are aware of the situation and inform the emergency services.
If there is time try to remember to take any medication, warm clothes, special foods, personal documents with you and before you leave switch off heating, gas, electric, and water supplies and lock all doors and windows before you go.
